⚔️ What is The Spell Brigade?

The Spell Brigade is a co-op bullet heaven roguelite developed by Bolt Blaster Games, a six-person independent studio based in Diepenbeek, Belgium. The game places 1–4 players in the roles of powerful wizards fighting back against waves of increasingly dangerous enemies across three distinct magical maps. Its defining mechanic is friendly fire — every spell harms both enemies and allies, creating chaotic, hilarious, and deeply strategic co-op sessions.

Originally released in Early Access on September 16, 2024, The Spell Brigade achieved over 1 million players before its full 1.0 launch on April 29, 2026 on both Steam (PC) and PlayStation 5, with full crossplay between platforms. The 1.0 update introduced the 15th playable wizard Knelly, a new boss (Mul'gath the Twisted One), the Masteries system, Ascension Outfits, Trial Covenants, and a full original soundtrack by composer Austin Wintory.

Unlike other survivors-like games such as Vampire Survivors or Brotato, The Spell Brigade emphasizes the social chaos of co-op play. The greatest threat — and the greatest strength — is often your own friends. Managing spell positioning, elemental synergies, and friendly fire in a coordinated team creates a depth of play rarely found in the genre.

🗺️ Explore the Wiki

This The Spell Brigade wiki covers every aspect of the game in depth. Whether you are searching for the best wizard tier list, trying to figure out which element is strongest, or hunting down the last few of the 78 achievements, you will find detailed, accurate guides here — all updated for the 1.0 full release.

The Spell Brigade — Maps & Threat Levels

The game features three maps: Verdant Meadows (beginner, home to boss Sol'phish), Frozen Ancients (intermediate, home to Krog'wa), and Pyrestorm Pit (advanced, volcanic hazards, lava pools and tornadoes). Each map offers Moderate, Severe and Hardcore Threat levels. Completing all three on Hardcore is among the game's most demanding challenges and required for several achievements.

Elements & Dual-Element Combinations

The Spell Brigade's element system goes deeper than most players initially realize. Beyond the seven base elements (Lightning, Acid, Fire, Wildfire, Ice, Dark, Plasma), combining two elements on a team creates unique dual-element reactions. For example, Acid + Acid creates Corrosion (target deals less damage), while Dark + Acid creates Blight (corrupted enemies spread Acid). The full Elements Guide documents all 10 combinations.

Solo vs. Co-op Play

The Spell Brigade scales well for both solo and co-op play, but the experience differs significantly. Solo runs reward single-wizard mastery — knowing your chosen wizard's optimal build path is critical. Co-op unlocks team synergies like Hatti's frozen zone + teammate AOE combinations, the Aldric healer + Campanelli reviver safety net, and full Dark corruption team builds that are impossible in solo. See the Builds page for both solo and co-op recommendations.

The Spell Brigade vs. Vampire Survivors

The most frequent comparison for The Spell Brigade is Vampire Survivors. Both are auto-shooting survivors-like games with roguelite upgrade systems. The key differences: The Spell Brigade is co-op first with active manual spell aiming and friendly fire, while Vampire Survivors is solo-focused with fully automatic attacks and no team damage to manage.

❓ The Spell Brigade — Quick FAQ

What is The Spell Brigade? +

The Spell Brigade is a co-op bullet heaven roguelite developed by Bolt Blaster Games (Belgium). 1–4 players control wizards and battle increasingly dangerous enemy hordes using spells, elemental infusions and augmentations. The 1.0 version launched April 29, 2026 on Steam (PC) and PS5, with crossplay between the two platforms.

Can you play The Spell Brigade solo or offline? +

Yes, The Spell Brigade fully supports solo play. You can run any map, wizard or difficulty alone. An internet connection is required to connect to online services for matchmaking, but solo runs are entirely viable — especially on Moderate Threat difficulty to start.

Is The Spell Brigade on PS5 and Xbox? +

Yes — The Spell Brigade launched on PS5 on April 29, 2026 alongside the Steam 1.0 release, with full crossplay between PC and PS5. There is currently no Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or mobile version.

What is the best wizard for beginners in The Spell Brigade? +

Reginald (The Lucky Mage) is the best starting wizard. His +2 Luck passive dramatically improves upgrade roll quality, making every level-up decision easier. Campanelli (Moon Mage) is also an excellent beginner choice thanks to her forgiving playstyle and team revive abilities.

Does The Spell Brigade have friendly fire? +

Yes — friendly fire is a core mechanic. All spells damage both enemies AND your teammates. This is intentional and defines the game's chaotic co-op identity. Certain augmentations can convert friendly fire into healing, completely inverting the mechanic.

How much does The Spell Brigade cost? +

The Spell Brigade normally costs $12.99 on Steam. It launched with a 40% discount ($7.79) through May 6, 2026. A Disciples of Sol'phish Skin Pack DLC is available for $4.99, and a Deluxe Edition bundle includes the base game and DLC together.

What is the best build in The Spell Brigade? +

The Star Mage + Falling Stars + Lightning infusion is the community's consensus best build ('The GOAT Build'). Stack Luck → Cooldown Reduction → Damage, aim for Spell Level 20 Falling Stars, and use Thunder augmentations. For boss-killing, Reginald + Astral Orbs + Acid infusion is dominant.
